Sinjar School Re-Opening
About the Program
Together with our partner, Iraq Health Access Organization (IHAO) ICF is supporting a project to refurbish and re-open the Al Waleed primary school in Sinjar. Al-Waleed primary school was built originally in 1980, was partially renovated in 2010, and has remained abandoned and unused since the ISIS occupation. The school will serve up to 400 school children.
Locals living in the Al-Waleed complex have been contracted to conduct the refurbishment, which has now been completed. Local teachers will be appointed to the school by the Directorate of Education. Teacher salaries and ongoing school costs will be managed by IHAO, in conjunction with the Directorate of Education. ICF may also provide some pro bono support for teachers to improve teaching methods, understand the psycho-social needs of children, and enhance learning opportunities.
Program Location: Sinjar Province
Program Goals
To provide an opportunity for local children to return to school in Sinjar, and to get the education they need and deserve. This program also aims to provide employment opportunities for local workers and teachers.
